Settled Ger: Bringing Innovation to the Ger Districts of Ulaanbaatar

There are close to 100,000 gers in Ulaanbaatar. Though perfect for a nomadic lifestyle, gers are ill-suited for sedentary living, especially in the coldest capital city in the world. The ger’s low thermal mass and insufficient insulation require urban ger residents to burn large amounts of unrefined coal to survive the winter months. This has become a financial burden for the households and a public health catastrophe for the city. Ulaanbaatar has become one of the most air polluted cities in the world, with winter PM2.5 levels 40 times higher than the WHO recommended amount.

This talk aims to present some of the innovative work being done in the ger districts to address air pollution and other key issues. I will talk about the opportunities for large-scale impact and the need to attract international stakeholders as well as the potential consequences of inaction.

Badruun Gardi is founder and CEO of GerHub, a nonprofit social enterprise that develops innovative and affordable products to improve the living environment for ger district residents of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
