Language
MIASU runs a language teaching programme with tailor-made courses to suit the need of its students and staff; other members of the University may be able to attend if numbers permit.
Recently tuition has been given in:
Modern Mongolian and classical script at Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels, Tibetan at beginner level and Russian.
The Unit library holds language teaching texts for:
Kyrgyz
Tibetan
Amdo Tibetan
Mongolian (Cyrillic)
Mongolian (Bichig)
and has certain materials on other languages such as Buryat and Kalymk
Courses in Chinese language are run at the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and the University Language Centre also holds courses and course materials for many languages.
The Unit is fortunate in having the services of Mrs Bayarmandakh Gaunt, who is a native Mongolian speaker and also provides services as translator and interpreter between the Mongolian and English languages. Clients have included Amnesty International, Home Office Immigration and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Metropolitan Police and the BBC.
Dr Karma Phuntsho has given tuition in Tibetan language.
